Don’t Replace Original Windows in Historic Buildings

Windows are a much maligned aspect of historical buildings: their seeming fragility and ineffectiveness, coupled with the double glazing boom over the last few years has actually resulted in original windows in traditional buildings often being viewed as something of a liability rather than the asset that they are.

As concerns about resource efficiency, retention of constructed heritage and sustainability end up being more pressing issues, keeping initial windows is becoming a much more attractive choice. But for those of your still thinking about new windows for your historic residential or commercial properties, here are five reasons why you must never ever change the original windows in your historic property.

1. Replacement Windows Aren’t Sustainable

You need to never ever change the initial windows in your historic property is that it is simply not sustainable. Treated correctly, original wood windows will withstand the test of time, lasting for as long as the residential or commercial property lasts. Replacement windows last anything in between 10 to 40 years, with the WWF finding that the typical UPVC window unit is replaced after just 18 years. Replacing initial windows with new, but poor quality windows, merely commences a cycle or waste and replace. As Scott Sidler from The Craftsman Blog states, “The greenest window is the one that is currently set up.”

2. Replacement Windows Destroy Built Heritage

Windows belong to what makes structures distinct, appealing and in-keeping with a particular time, period or design style. Even where a building is not noted, keeping the original windows is an easy method to maintain sought-after duration functions and ensure that your residential or commercial property remains true to the look and style of its age. As specified in the Craftsmen Blog “A big part of a historic home’s character is kept in its windows. Original historical windows were customised built to fit their frames and enhance the style of the house in a manner that no replacement can.”

3. You Might Not Get Planning Permission

Leading on from the value of maintaining built heritage, another reason to never get replacement windows in your historic home is that you might not even be permitted to! Planning consent differs across the nation; nevertheless, replacement windows for listed structures are typically not permitted unless they are on a like for like basis, and this implies expensive and undependable slim line double glazing. Even if you do select to go down the preparation authorisation path for replacement windows, you could wait on months or perhaps years to receive the appropriate consent that you need. It really is less trouble to restore your initial windows where required and invest in discrete and efficient secondary glazing.

4. New Windows are Difficult (Sometimes Impossible) to Maintain and Repair

Original windows are made to be repaired and brought back, so if your windows are draughty, rattle in the window or are painted shut that doesn’t indicate that you need to change them. Window repair specialists can perform a host of upkeep works to get your original windows running as good as brand-new. According to Time Money a total window overhaul usually runs ₤ 100 to ₤ 350 per window, and by the time you’re completed, the old windows may end up nearly as efficient as brand new ones.

You can even take a look at our other article on window repair and repair work to get you started, such as this one on How To Restore Your Original Windows.

5. You’ll Have Less Light

On average you get 15% less seeing location and for that reason less light due to replacement windows being set inside the original window opening. And nobody desires a home with less light!

6. You’ll Be Paying Them Off For Years

Replacement windows may seem like the kind of investment that will pay for itself, but is that really the case? The payback period for replacement windows can be anything from 40-60 years, according to Landmark Services or even up to 100 years according to Time Money! Include this into the truth that the best guarantee that the WWF could find for replacement windows was just 40 years, then you start to see how replacement windows are not quite the sound investment that their often touted as.

7. You’ll Reduce the Value of Your Property

Contributed to this the decrease in property worth you could be looking at if you change the windows. Buyers of historical homes will pay top dollar for houses that are chock loaded with original functions, and windows have a big part to play in this, with the most essential features that buyers search for being original floorings and windows.

Ways to Make your Sash Windows Energy Effective

Sash windows are typically an essential part of the historical character of your home. However, original windows can be exceptionally energy inefficient.

Sash windows have actually been designed in such a way that they can be dismantled for repair work or the replacement of damaged sash cords with relative ease. Lots of individuals do not realise this, and often believe that replacement of the whole window is the only choice when they run into troubles with maintenance or enhancing energy performance. This is just not the case.

Why keep sash windows?

Replacing sash windows not only impacts the appearance and character of your structure, it is likewise exceptionally expensive and potentially harmful to the structural integrity of the building itself.

On top of this, changing original sash windows can be exceptionally wasteful. The high-quality wood that forms the basis of initial timer windows is exceptionally tough to come by nowadays, indicating that the replacement and eventual discarding of these frames would be an unneeded waste.

Not just that, but plastic double glazing tends to only have a helpful life of around twenty years approximately. After this they often wind up as garbage dump, taking in huge amounts of energy in their production to become waste. As we go into a period of ever-scarcer resources and climate uncertainty, minimising waste and energy consumption is of vital significance.

Without further ado, let’s look at four simple things that you can do to make your sash windows for energy effective.

1. Upkeep

Keeping your sash windows in a great state of repair work not only makes sure that they will last for many years to come, however it will also make them more effective. Ensuring that windows are well painted will lower cold and damp in the window location, and taking care of fractures will lower draughts. Check your windows annually and be prepared to look for the most typical of problems:

  • Cracked and flaky paintwork: combat this by repainting every 5-8 years.
  • Windows sticking: this can be due to the bad refitting of the staff bead about report or recording, which can quickly be fixed. Alternatively, it may be because of an accumulation of paint, which is easily detachable.
  • Look out for failing putty and broken or split panes of glass: these can be easily fixed.
  • Broken cords
  • Timber decay: minor repairs can be performed by painting, more substantial repair work can be carried out by a qualified joiner.

2. Draught-Proofing

Did you understand that the gaps around your sash windows can be the equivalent of an opening measuring a minimum of 10 inches? Draught proofing your sash windows is among the most useful and cost effective ways to make your home more energy effective, conserving you from expensive heating expenses and draughty, rattling windows.

Depending on the kind of draught proofing you choose, your repayment is normally anything between 5 and twenty-five years. The repayment can also be as low as three years, indicating you start to reap the benefits of energy effectiveness a lot more rapidly. Simply to compare: it can take between 60 and 100 years for your double glazing to start saving you cash! It actually does pay to restore your gorgeous windows and take advantage of new draught-proofing innovations.

3. Secondary Glazing

Heat can also be lost through the glass of your windows themselves, causing cold spots and condensation. You can right away tackle this with a pair of heavy curtains, which can cut heat loss by approximately one third.

Double glazing, on the other hand, ultimately suggests the loss of your initial windows. This can be have major consequences for the character and beauty of your home, especially if you reside in a historical or noted structure and can not get double glazing that sufficiently follows the original window pattern.

4. Shutters.

Shutters are possibly the most conventional of ways to keep in heat at night, and making your sash windows more energy effective. Sash windows were typically made with accompanying shutters to retain heat and offer privacy in the evenings. Not only do initial shutters look good, well-fitting shutters can perform along with double glazing. The primary concern with shutters is that they block out the light and are inappropriate for daytime use.

Sоmе оf uѕ wаnt tо lоѕе wеight, ѕоmе оf uѕ wаnt mоrе mоnеу аnd some оf us juѕt wаnt tо build аmаzing rеlаtiоnѕhiрѕ; but it’s hаrd to rеасh thоѕе goals and results if thе person tаking thоѕе асtiоnѕ iѕn’t coming from a confident, dеfinitе, аnd реrѕiѕtеnt рlасе. Hаvе уоu noticed thаt whenever уоu begin your journey towards аnу gоаl, if уоur hеаrt оr соnfidеnсе isn’t fully invested in thаt gоаl, уоu end up gеtting bоrеd, ԛuitting or failing?

Why does thiѕ hарреn? It hарреnѕ because оur bоdу is a суbеrnеtiс mесhаniѕm – it brings uѕ ‘bасk оn course’ when wе break оur соmfоrt zоnе, just like a plane аutоmаtiсаllу соmеѕ bасk on соurѕе after hitting turbulеnсе. Thiѕ iѕ the rеаѕоn so many реорlе ԛuit: they do ѕоmеthing for a while, thеу ѕtаrt ѕееing results, thеу get comfortable and then they gеt ѕtuсk. Lоѕing wеight, inсrеаѕing our inсоmе аnd bеing аn amazing huѕbаnd/wifе can only mаnifеѕt if wе mаkе оur dеѕirеd rеѕult оur соmfоrt zоnе! In оthеr wоrdѕ, mаkе yourself fееl uncomfortable until уоu gеt there. Yоu’vе got tо сhаngе уоur аррrоасh tоwаrdѕ асhiеving thаt gоаl; аnd tо сhаngе thаt we’ve gоt to сhаngе оur ѕеlf imаgе.

If wе рiсturе оurѕеlvеѕ as a fаt реrѕоn, wе will diеt fоr a whilе, get comfortable аnd withоut knоwing, our суbеrnеtiс mесhаniѕm will bring uѕ right bасk tо where wе wеrе. Wе сrу, wе get аngrу аnd еvеntuаllу wе givе up! Wе nееd tо treat thе ѕоurсе. If оur ѕеlf-imаgе doesn’t сhаngе, wе will never find thе соnfidеnсе, dеѕirе аnd реrѕiѕtеnсе tо ѕuссееd and manifest thоѕе rеѕultѕ.

There iѕ оnе аmаzing exercise уоu can dо in оrdеr to hеlр уоu manifest those rеѕultѕ in a fаѕtеr аnd bеttеr wау: Yоu nееd tо write a ѕсriрt оf уоu. Nоt уоur ѕituаtiоn, nоt a ѕtоrу оf уоur раѕt… juѕt YOU. Who would уоu likе tо bе? Bеgin jоtting down idеаѕ оf thе person уоu wоuld like tо bе, аnd rеаd it оvеr аnd оvеr. Allow уоurѕеlf tо tоtаllу relax and fееl like you are аlrеаdу thаt реrѕоn; you will see rеѕultѕ manifest in nо timе.

Nоw whу did I bring uр actors? Wеll, асtоrѕ imagine themselves tо be someone else all thе timе; in fact thеу’rе рrоѕ аt it! Sо if асtоrѕ аrе studying the сhаrасtеr they аrе trуing tо рlау in a mоviе, wе ѕhоuld ѕtudу the реrѕоn we are аѕрiring tо be in оur own mоviе! Studу уоur dream, rеаllу think about еvеrу aspect оf whо уоu wаnt to bе, and then bеgin creating a рlаn and tаking action tо mаnifеѕt еасh of those ԛuаlitiеѕ. Brеаk down thоѕе comfort zоnеѕ аnd allow your суbеrnеtiс mесhаniѕm to асԛuirе аnd nеw optimal ѕtаtе оf being. Mаkе ѕuссеѕѕ your norm instead оf failure, аnd you’ll be оn уоur way to creating bigger аnd bеttеr fаntаѕiеѕ.

Why you are Unique (and that is pretty awesome)

Do you ever feel like you’re an outlier? That no matter how much you try you don’t quite fit in? I know I have felt that many times, that I wasn’t like everybody else. I couldn’t quite figure out why, that is, until I got older. I have come to realise that the reason I don’t feel like everybody else is because I am unlike everybody else… and now that I think about it, it’s pretty awesome.

Have you ever heard that no two snowflake is exactly alike? Well its true, each snowflake up-close is distinct and beautiful in its own way. People, like snowflakes, are each unique and distinct and have attributes that only they possess (and that means you too).

The universe doesn’t produce copies, and you may be thinking “yeah right, tell that to my identical twin”, but if you really think about it there so many differences between even identical twins…   everything and everyone has something different and special about them.

Seriously, every person’s fingerprints, DNA, perspectives, physical capabilities, talents, and personalities are different. It can be kind of hard to believe, especially when it feels like society is trying to make us into cardboard cutouts of each other, but really that is only superficial. Even if we try to conform or fit in, even if we try to maintain the status quo… it’s pretty impossible… because we would be defying nature.

Because we have this beautiful gift of uniqueness, we have the ability to express it in a way that no one else can. Because we are unique we can have creative thoughts and innovations that no-one else has thought, thoughts and ideas that only belong to us.

This means that you should embrace who you are, and embrace your uniqueness. Do something that no one else can do, make a difference that no one else can, be yourself… because seriously, why try to be like someone else?

Think your own thoughts and speak your own truth… because in doing so you are doing something pretty special. Take the road less travelled, the road that is perfect for you. By doing so you are being you.

I leave you with a beautiful classic poem by the brilliant Robert Frost that has inspired my writing today.

The Road Not Taken

By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim

Because it was grassy and wanted wear,

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference
